Can You Revise a Filed ITR?
Yes! Under Section 139(5) of the Income Tax Act, you can file a Revised ITR to correct any mistake or omission in your original return.
Deadline for Revised ITR
You can revise your ITR up to December 31 of the assessment year (or before the assessment is completed, whichever is earlier).
Example: For FY 2023–24 (AY 2024–25), you can revise until December 31, 2024.
What Can You Correct in a Revised ITR?
- Wrong income figures
- Missed deductions (80C, 80D, HRA)
- Bank account details
- Wrong ITR form selected
- Incorrect TDS entries
Steps to File Revised ITR
- Login to incometax.gov.in
- Go to e-File → Income Tax Returns → File Income Tax Return
- Select the same Assessment Year
- Choose "Revised Return u/s 139(5)" as filing type
- Enter the Acknowledgement Number of your original return
- Make corrections and submit
- e-Verify the revised return
Important Notes
- You can revise multiple times before the deadline
- The revised return replaces the original
- Refund claims can also be corrected in a revised return
